“I want to erase the image of the corrupt politician. I want my name to be synonymous with excellent public service and clean and good government”
Cong. Pacquiao to implement DSWD’s “food for work” program
SARANGANI Province—–To alleviate poverty especially in the far-flung areas, World Boxing Champ and this province’s law maker Emmanuel “Manny” D. Pacquiao is set to initiate the “food for work” program of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) here.
In an interview with, Michael Bren Evangelio, the provincial congressional chief of staff of Pacquiao, said, the first phase of the project will be formally launched this early February at the municipalities of Glan, Alabel and in Malapatan.
“That food for work program of Congressman Pacquiao, eventually, it will also be implemented in other municipalities of Sarangani”, Evangelio added.
Pacquiao earlier said that he spared P2 million from his congressional fund for his counterpart with the DSWD’s budget to buy more stocks of rice so the identified indigent Sarangans will all benefit the program.
The “food for work” program is a nationwide project of DSWD in coordination with the National Food Authority (NFA).
Said agencies are also set to distribute more or less 2 million metric tons of imported rice to 48,000 Day Care Centers all over the country.
It will also benefit the country’s 1.5 million children aging 3-5 years old particularly those from depressed families.
Evangelio, however clarified, only qualified beneficiaries or only the indigenous people of the province can avail the program by doing short term jobs such as street sweepings and some carpentry works for provincial infra projects.
The recipients will also work to various community reconstruction and rehabilitation projects in exchange of foods.
‘It is also a strategy which basically aims to help disaster victims to cope with tragedies, but the government doesn’t want to appear it like dole-outs so they (beneficiaries) have to do community services to avail the program”, Evangelio said in an interview with the Public Information Office (PIO) .
